Public invited to watch arborists prune ‘magnificent old black walnut tree’

GUELPH – The black walnut tree in Woodlawn Memorial Park may be as old as the cemetery itself, at 160 years, officials say.

Guelph Tree Trust (GTT) will provide arborist care high in the tree’s crown on April 29, and encourages people to attend the event to watch and learn about the legacy tree.

Members of GTT will be on hand to provide information on the tree and pruning work, which will be led by GTT arborist Doug Steel of Full Circle Tree Care.

The event will include tree-related family friendly activities like guided tree walks within the cemetery.

A detailed event program will be available in early April at treetrust.ca/partner/guelph.

The black walnut is one of over a thousand trees in the cemetery managed by Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Many of the trees are old, large and require special expertise to prune and maintain — a costly service for a non-profit such as Woodlawn Memorial Park.

GTT covers the cost, ensuring trees that may otherwise be left to their demise are looked after.

GTT is one of seven chapters of Ontario Tree Trust (OTT), a registered charity and a program of the Elora Environment Centre.

Officials at GTT say the black walnut will receive the care it needs to ensure that the city will have the benefits of its huge canopy and root system for as long as possible.
