Police offer tips for driving in frigid temperatures

LONDON – Police are offering some safety tips for drivers in light of a polar vortex that descended upon southern Ontario this week, sending the region into a deep freeze.

Officials with the OPP’s West Region are warning drivers to be prepared to face intense cold, coupled with heavy snowfall in some parts of the region.

“Situations like being stuck in the ditch or stranded in a significant traffic backup due to a collision can become downright dangerous when the mercury plunges,” police stated in a Jan. 20 press release.

Police are offering the following tips to help drivers stay safe in cold weather:

  • dress for winter even though you’ll be in your car, as you’ll be protected if you become stranded;
  • make sure your phone is charged;
  • ensure your fuel tank is full before hitting the road, as if you encounter a lengthy traffic delay, you’ll need your vehicle’s heater to stay warm;
  • carry a winter driving survival kit in your vehicle with these recommended items: a shovel, blanket, warm clothes, water, booster cables, flashlight, high energy foods, matches and a candle;
  • plan your trip before starting out and visit the Ministry of Transportation website (511on.ca) or Municipal 511 (municipal511.ca) for road conditions.
