Police beat: Uttering threats

CLIFFORD – Police have charged a local man with uttering threats following an incident here earlier this month.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were called for “a disturbance at an address” on Elora Street North in Clifford on Jan. 4 at about 3:30pm.

A 38-year-old Clifford man was charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include:

– a 38-year-old from Innisfil, who was charged with breach of recognizance in relation to an incident in Fergus on Jan. 8;

– a 31-year-old from Guelph/Eramosa, who was charged with two counts of spousal assault in relation to an incident in Fergus on Jan. 9; and

– a 38-year-old from Palmerston, who was charged with dangerous driving and uttering threats (to cause death or bodily harm – spousal) in relation to an incident in Palmerston on Jan. 9.

The accused individuals are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Plethora of charges

PUSLINCH – A Whitby driver faces 19 charges after a commercial vehicle was stopped by police here recently.

Wellington County OPP officials say an officer was monitoring traffic on Lake Road East in Puslinch on Dec. 28 at about 1:45pm.

“At this time the driver of a commercial motor vehicle was stopped to check safety and compliance with the vehicle,” police stated in a Jan. 3 press release.

A 34-year-old driver from Whitby was charged with:

– driving an unsafe combination of vehicles; 

– failing to surrender a licence;

– obstructed licence plate;

– using unauthorized plates;

– improper brakes on a trailer;

– having a load not properly secured;

– improper means of attachment;

– no directional signals;

– driving without a valid plate;

– overweight vehicle;

– failing to surrender a permit;

– four counts of improper tires; and

– four counts of improper tires on a trailer.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court on April 2.

Driving charges

ELORA – An Elora driver is facing five driving charges after being pulled over by police recently.

Wellington OPP officers were monitoring traffic on Speers Road in Elora on Jan. 3 at about 4:45pm when they detected a “suspicious vehicle” and initiated a traffic stop.

A 21-year-old from Elora was charged with speeding, careless driving, having an improper braking system for a commercial vehicle, failing to ensure a daily inspection is conducted properly and failing to surrender a registration certificate.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Commercial vehicle driving offences

MOUNT FOREST – A Harriston resident and a local business are facing  a number of charges after police allegedly identified  13 provincial offences during a traffic stop here last week.

On Jan. 10 at about 3:30pm the OPP’s West Region Traffic Unit was monitoring traffic on Mount Forest Drive in Mount Forest “when they identified a suspicious motor vehicle,” police say.

A 32-year-old from Harriston was charged with failing to surrender a registration certificate, failing to enter a defect in a daily inspection report and driving a  commercial vehicle with a load not properly secured.

The accused was also given warnings for four other commercial vehicle driving offences.

A local business was charged with having no name on a commercial vehicle, failing to ensure a daily inspection is conducted properly, permitting operation of a commercial vehicle with a load not properly secured and permitting operation of vehicle without an inspection sticker.

The business was also given warnings for two other offences.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
