MAPLETON – A Mapleton man is dead following a serious crash last Thursday on Wellington Road 12 near Glen Allan.
A portion of the road was closed after three separate crashes in the area involving a total of eight vehicles.
Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews responded to the initial scene, between Wellington Roads 45 and 86, on March 6 at about 11:30am.
“As a result of the collision and poor weather conditions, Wellington Road 12 will be closed from Wellington Road 86 to Wellington Road 8,” police stated in a press release.
In an update police stated “a 34-year-old from Mapleton Township was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“No other injuries were reported.”
Police stated “the identity of the deceased individual will not be released out of respect for the family’s privacy.”
The initial OPP press release referred to just one crash, but police spokesperson Matthew Burton later told the Advertiser there were three separate collisions in the area – two involving three vehicles and one involving two vehicles.
“The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking the public to please avoid the area,” the OPP stated.
Thieves steal $40,000 in property during break-in
HILLSBURGH – Police are looking for help to identify three suspects after $40,000 worth of property was stolen during a residential break-in here on Tuesday.
Wellington County OPP officials say the break-in took place on March 4 at about 12:15pm at a property on Wallace Street in Hillsburgh.
“Two suspects entered … via the rear glass door and stole approximately $40,000 worth of property from within the unoccupied residence,” police stated in a March 7 press release.
“The suspects then fled in a white [SUV]… which had no front licence plate and heavily tinted windows. Three suspects are currently being sought in this incident.”
Police are asking for help to identify the suspects and the vehicle involved.

Man injured in crash
GUELPH/ERAMOSA – An elderly Rockwood man was injured in a crash here on Monday involving a transport truck and SUV.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, on Highway 7, southeast of Rockwood, on March 10 at about 10:30am.
Wellington County OPP officials say the highway was closed for several hours between Eramosa-Milton Townline and 5th Line Nassagaweya.
“An 80-year-old driver from Rockwood was transported to a trauma centre … with non-life threatening (injuries),” police stated in a press release.

Charge laid after
transport truck drags car
FERGUS – Police officers on scene to investigate after a pedestrian was hit by a transport truck at a busy Fergus intersection witnessed a second tractor-trailer dragging a car through the very same intersection.
Wellington County OPP officials say that on March 5 at about 6:30pm, officers “were stationary at the intersection of Belsyde Ave and St. David Street South conducting an unrelated investigation, when suddenly a tractor-trailer was observed dragging a vehicle underneath it as it was in a turning movement.”
The driver of the transport truck, a 40-year-old from Brampton, was charged with making an unsafe move (lane or shoulder) and is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
“There were no reported injuries as a result of this collision,” police stated.
Partner violence
WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.
Those arrested include:
– a 40-year-old from Listowel, who was charged with failing to comply with a release order, failing to comply with a probation order and breach of recognizance, in relation to an incident in Palmerston on March 9.
The accused individual is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
Driving charges
MAPLETON – A Chatham resident faces numerous driving charges after being stopped by police here last week.
Wellington County OPP officials say officers conducting proactive traffic enforcement pulled over a commercial vehicle on Wellington Road 7 in Mapleton Township on March 7 at about 8pm.
A 50-year-old from Chatham was charged with improper lights and failing to enter a defect in a daily inspection report. The accused was also given several warnings for other issues. A business associated with the traffic stop is facing three charges.
