Police beat: Brantford man arrested after cross-county crime spree

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Police have arrested a Brantford man in connection with a crime spree last month that stretched across Wellington County and beyond.

On the morning of May 29, a pickup truck stolen from Georgetown rammed open a locked gate at a compound on Wellington Road 124 in Erin. The suspects stole a side-by-side utility vehicle worth about $18,000.

The suspects then stole a white pickup truck worth approximately $20,000 from a residence on Trafalgar Road just outside Hillsburgh and used it to steal about $50 in fuel from a gas station on Wellington Road 124.

Shortly thereafter, the suspects went to a gas station on Main Street in Harriston and attempted to use a stolen credit card to purchase cigarettes. When the card was declined, the suspects then stole the cigarettes and fled.

They drove to a gas station on Main Street in Listowel and stole about $25 in fuel while using the white pickup truck.

Austin Richard Michael Anderson-Hill, 24, of Brantford, was held for bail and charged with:

– break and enter;

– possession of break and enter tools;

– theft over $5,000;

– theft under $5,000 (three counts);

– possession of stolen property – over $5,000;

– fraudulent use of a credit card;

– possession of a (stolen) credit card; and

– breach of recognizance (four counts).

Serious collision

CENTRE WELLINGTON – On June 18 at about 1:30pm emergency crews responded to a serious collision involving two motor vehicles on 8th Line West near Sideroad 11 in former Pilkington Township.

Wellington County OPP officials say a pickup truck and a dump truck collided and the 70-year-old driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to a trauma centre with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the dump truck sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the collision is being investigated and police are asking witnesses to call 1-888-310-1122.

Break-in, theft

ERIN – Police are looking for a suspect after a break-in here last week.

On June 11 at about 12:30pm Wellington County OPP officers responded to a residence on Sideroad 5 in Erin.

Police say the owner arrived home to find two suspects with a vehicle in the driveway.

“A side door of the residence had been forced open. The home was ransacked and a number of items were stolen including electronics, a flat screen television, a safe, and a quantity of jewelry,” police stated in a press release.

“The two suspects were described as white males. One of the suspects had dark hair and a stocky build. They were last observed leaving eastbound on Sideroad 5 in a grey Ford Escape with no front plate. The rear plate is possibly from out-of-province.”

Quarry quarrel

ELORA – On June 6 at about 5pm Wellington County OPP responded to a call at the Elora Quarry on Wellington Road 18.

Police say two groups of young people were fighting in the parking lot.

“OPP attended and located one male who had been sprayed with an aerosol weapon,” police stated in a press release.

“He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services. A knife was also recovered at the scene.”

A 17-year-old Hamilton youth has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and is to appear in Guelph court on July 10.

Illegal cigarettes

PUSLINCH – On June 2 at about 10:30am, a Wellington County OPP officer stopped a pickup truck on Maltby Road near Concession 7.

Police say the driver was prohibited from operating a vehicle and that during the investigation, officers located and seized 14 cartons containing over 2,500 unmarked cigarettes in the vehicle.

Kenneth Munn, 55, of Guelph-Eramosa, was charged with driving while prohibited, driving without insurance and two counts of  possessing unmarked cigarettes.

He is to appear in Guelph court on July 5 and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
