Palmerston dialysis unit opens

The Palmerston and District Hospital Dialysis Unit celebrated its grand opening June 26 – done on time and within budget.

Patients will start receiving treatment July 7 and the clinic will operate three days a week initially. The unit is a satellite program under the direction of the Grand River Hospital Regional Dialysis Program.

“We have nine patients at this point in time ready to start their dialysis treatment at PDH,” said clinical director Joy Bevan said. “They are thrilled to be able to have care so close to home and eliminate the drive to Kitchener.”

The cost of the project is $2.9-million, with most of the funding from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The Palmerston District Hospital Foundation has contributed $500,000.

“The strong financial support from both the Ministry and our community reflects the importance of this service for our area,” said NWHC President Jerome Quenneville.

Perth Wellington MPP John Wilkinson said, “Our government is committed to supporting our rural communities, especially our beloved rural hospitals. Partnerships such as this one provide critical services for our loved ones, close to home.”

Board chairman McLellan Shaw said, “Relationships with neighbouring larger hospitals are critical.”
