Palmerston cenotaph relocation reviewed

Councillors here are still considering relocation of the Palmerston cenotaph to a more visible location in town.

At a recent council session, Mayor David Anderson said that he and Councillor Wayne Martin had met with Mac Anderson of Wingham Memorials.

“We’re looking at the cenotaph in Palmerston,” the mayor explained.

“We’re looking at the possibility of moving it, and possibly enhancing it more by increasing its height.”

Anderson added that he and Martin met with the Palmerston Legion with a presentation, including a proposed site in the area of the Old ‘81 Locomotive in the Lions Heritage Park.

“The Palmerston Lions have no major opposition to moving it,” and as a result, Anderson is investigating a price to see what cost would be incurred.

Having been on the Veterans Affairs website, Anderson said there is some funding available.

“In most cases, there is funding for half the cost for restoration or rehabilitation of monuments.”

“We’re hoping the new location will be a bit more visible on the main street.”

He added that parking is a bit difficult at the current site.

He added the new site would be both closer to the Palmerston Legion and there would be additional lighting.

The item came as a follow up to last years proposal to relocate the cenotaph.

Issues at that time included the small size of the site, and that because of its location on the site of the Palmerston library, the cenotaph would be on Wellington County, not municipal property.

The intent was that locating the cenotaph in the heritage park would make the cenotaph more visible and create a venue for more people to participate in the ceremonies.
