Norwell District Secondary School curling teams compete at CWOSSA

PALMERSTON – The Norwell District Secondary School Varsity Girls and Boys Curling teams competed at CWOSSA in Shelburne on Feb. 27.

The Varsity girls started strong with a blowout 10-1 win over Waterloo Collegiate. In game two the Norwell girls fell behind to the Bluewater champions from Saugeen Secondary School in Port Elgin and they were down by four points with three ends left to play. The resilient Norwell rink battled back and tied the game in the last end to force an extra end. Saugeen was holding the hammer in the extra end and was able to make key draws to give Norwell its first lost of the season. In the final game of the day, Norwell easily defeated the District 10 champions from Orangeville 11-3. This left Norwell in a three-way tie for first place after pool play. After 25 ends of curling for the day, unfortunately the tiebreaker did not fall in Norwell’s favour and the girls were eliminated by 28 centimetres on a draw to the button. “Great season girls,” school officials state.

The Norwell District Secondary School Varsity boys curling team recently secured a third place finish in CWOSSA curling. In game one on Feb. 27, Norwell beat Kitchener Collegiate on a final skip rock. In game two the team lost to Grey Highlands and in game three it blanked JF Ross, winning 10-0. Day two brought the semi-finals against Holy Trinity. “After giving up five in the first end of the semi-finals against a strong team from Holy Trinity, the Varsity Reds climbed their way back up the mountain, due to timely shot making and a great team attitude,” school officials noted. The game was decided by Holy Trinity’s final skip stone which saw them score two and take the game 8-7. Officials state the team represented the school “in fine fashion” at the Orangeville Curling Club.
