New web site can help math students

Any a parent worried about how to support a child’s math homework questions should stop worrying.

An online initiative designed to help students succeed in mathematics is now available for grade 7 to 10 students in the Upper Grand District School Board.

The Ministry of Education and the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) have launched Homework Help – free, online math tutoring available five evenings a week. Students simply log-on at homeworkhelp.ilc.org and, by using an interactive chat room, they can obtain personalized tutoring from a certified Ontario math teacher. Chats can take place any time Sunday to Thursday between 5:30 and 9:30pm. Homework Help is free, live, and confidential.

Online interactive math resources are also available at that site to support students.

Resources include lessons on the most commonly asked math questions, interactive math tutorials, a scientific calculator, glossary of math terms, and highlights of previous math tutoring sessions.

Superintendent of Education Erin Kelly said, “Just over half of the students in grade 9 applied math in the Upper Grand District School Board are not meeting the provincial standard (EQAO results, 2009-10). This pilot program can help these students – and all students – succeed in mathematics.”

A student who already made use of the site, said, “I was amazed at this service, it really helps when you need quick help; the tutors are patient and are very nice. Love it.”

For more information, visit homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Parents and students in the Upper Grand District School Board with questions about the program are encouraged to email homeworkhelp@ugdsb.on.ca.

The ILC is the province’s designated provider of distance education.
