Seven families displaced following Mount Forest apartment fire

No one injured in non-suspicious blaze; damage estimate set at over $750,000

MOUNT FOREST – Nobody was injured but seven of ten families living in an apartment complex here are displaced after a fire in the building late Friday night.

Wellington North Fire officials say firefighters responded to the blaze on Main Street North at about 11:32pm on June 23.

“Firefighters arrived on scene of an apartment complex on fire with smoke showing. There were occupants in the building at the time of the fire, but all involved got out safely,” states a press release from deputy fire chief Callise Loos.

“A number of apartments in the building suffered damage due to a partial roof collapse.”

Other apartments suffered smoke and water damage, Loos added.

About 60 firefighters helped battle the blaze, from both Wellington North stations as well as departments in Minto, Durham, West Grey, and Southgate.

Officials say the cause of the fire is not yet known, but it is not considered suspicious.

The damage estimate is at least $750,000.

Loos explained seven out of ten families living in the building were displaced by the fire and subsequent damage.

Victim Services and the OPP helped to find them a place to stay for the night and Victim Services “will continue working … to find temporary lodging for them in the future,” Loos stated.

She thanked Victim Services for the help and lauded the efforts of firefighters, who “did a tremendous job containing the fire to one wing of the building.”
