Military lecture series at the museum

The Wellington County Museum and Archives is hosting a two-part military lectures series starting in November.

Historian and author Terry Copp, an expert on the Canadian liberation of northwest Europe, will present The Bridge Too Far Nov. 6 at 7pm. On Nov. 13 at 7pm he will continue the series with Liberation and Sacrifice: Canadian Soldiers and Dutch Civilians, October 1944.

Copp is the director of the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies. He is also an Elora resident and Wilfrid Laurier Professor Emeritus. He is the author or co-author of ten books and numerous articles on Canadian military history. A new edition of his best-selling book, Fields of Fire, with a new introduction was recently published in time for the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. Both presentations will be held in the Aboyne Hall, at 7pm. Admission will be by donation.

“We are very pleased to have Terry return this fall with a new lecture series,” said Libby Walker, activity programmer at the museum. “It is clear that there is a great interest in Canadian military history in the county and we are happy to provide this kind of quality presentation to the public, especially at this time of year.”

Additional remembrance week activities include a ceremony on the front lawn of the museum and archives to commemorate the fallen from Wellington County since the First World War. Markers will be placed to recognize the men and women who died fulfilling service to their country.

The ceremony begins at 10:30am on Nov. 5.  Refreshments will follow in the Nicholas Keith room. This is a great opportunity to tour the award winning World War I trench exhibit, Far From Home.

The Wellington County Museum and Archives is located on Wellington Rd 18, between Fergus and Elora.
