MINTO – The white-lined crosswalk at Mill Street, running parallel to Elora Street South, just south of the Harriston cenotaph, will be painted into a memorial honouring veterans.

Council approved the themed crosswalk at a May 5 meeting, agreeing to share roughly half of the estimated $5,600 cost with the Harriston Legion.

“We decided we should commemorate the veterans this year when the Legion is 100 years old, and we want to show our respect,” Legion branch president Anne South told the Community News.

The Legion will pay for coloured paint and stencilling, and town taxpayers will cover standard white paint.

The agreement was presented by town roads manager Mike McIsaac as precedent-setting, to guide future tribute crosswalk proposals.

The Legion is also on the hook for future maintenance costs as the crosswalk inevitably wears down, with the town continuing to cover the cost of white paint.

South said the crosswalk, located near the cenotaph, will serve as reminder of veterans and the Legion when it’s completed this summer.

The town is commissioning Chatsworth-based ALK Asphalt to do the job, and invoicing the Legion for its portion of the cost.
