Maryborough students take part in ‘Shop with a Cop and Firefighter’ event

‘Shop with a Cop and Firefighter’ – Maryborough Public School Grade 6 students had an opportunity to shop with some Wellington County OPP officers and Mapleton firefighters at Foodland in Drayton on Dec. 20.

“We are happy to see this tradition coming back,” school officials stated.

Students had $2,400 to spend at the grocery store to stock up the local food bank for the holiday season. Teams of two students joined either a firefighter or police officer to get as close to $200 as possible without going over the allotted amount. Students learned concepts about healthy eating, tax, unit rate, and addition. Each group had to keep a running total and try to get as close to $200 as possible without using a calculator.

“We are thankful for all of the community donations to make this trip possible,” school officials stated, specifically mentioning the Moorefield Optimists, Drayton United Church Women and many individual contributions from community members and staff at the school. Hayley Donaldson, left, and Chloe Trinier shopped with firefighters Dave Krnac, left, and Rob Abell.
