Lever: Still no resolution on ORC issues

Puslinch Township officials still have not resolved issues with the new Optimist Recreation Centre (ORC) here.

Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever made that announcement at the beginning of the township’s second community forum meeting last week.

He told those in attendance there will likely be nothing new to announce on the topic until the weather gets colder, as part of the delays is determining if the rink’s compressor can keep the ice frozen at certain temperatures.

The issue was also brought up at the township’s first community forum meeting in May, during which a resident expressed frustration that the municipality had a brand new $2.1-million facility that no one is able to use.

Construction of the  14,000 square foot ORC was completed nearly a year ago, but the township has been embroiled ever since in negotiations with the construction contractor over noise and vibration from the compressor. In May Lever said he was optimistic the township would have a resolution within a couple of months.

Additional updates

Among the other issues updated last week from the first community forum in May was illegal dumping.

Lever explained councillors rejected a motion to increase fines but they hope to have a staff report back by Christmas explaining what other municipalities do to deal with illegal dumping.

Other information provided by the mayor included:

– the Big Lake: council is still waiting to hear back from the aggregate companies about how much gravel is located under the road allowance;

– hunting coyotes: council decided not to implement a bounty on coyotes due to “safety issues”;

– Concession 11: a review of the condition of the road will take place as part of the pending township-wide review; and

– sound system: council has narrowed the search down to two suppliers for the installation of microphones and speakers in the council chamber (he hopes it will be installed within a month).
