Lever: former councillor will be missed

Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever said the death of former councillor Dick Visser will leave a void in the township.

“Dick will certainly be missed by all of us,” Lever said in a statement before the Aug. 17 council meeting.

The mayor noted a number of township officials attended a memorial service the previous day for Visser, who was found dead on Aug. 6 at his new Manitoba home, west of Winnipeg.

Visser, 65, had arrived there just days earlier after leaving Puslinch, where he had lived since childhood. RCMP officials stated foul play was not suspected in his death.

Visser, who served on Puslinch council from 1986 to 1992 and again from 1994 until 2010, was known for speaking his mind as a representative of the township, particularly on issues like problems within the fire department, the proposed Aikensville gravel pit and the proposed “Big Lake” plans.

Lever said Visser was very vocal in his support or opposition of many issues, but he was also someone who enjoyed life and enjoyed laughter.

“If there isn’t laughter today, then we do a disservice to Dick,” Lever said, quoting a portion of Visser’s memorial service.
