Help fill local food baskets this Easter

The East Wellington Community Services food bank has seen an increase in users since the start of this year and the organization is anticipating the need to continue to grow due to the struggling job economy, rise in gas prices, utility costs and general cost of living.

For those on restricted or low incomes, those who are without steady work and those who are suffering a sudden illness, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to be able to manage to cover their basic expenses, such as food.

Locally, between the areas of Guelph-Eramosa and the Town of Erin served by the agency services through its two food banks (Erin and Rockwood), the organization supports more than 1,100 people – representing a significant number of neighbors, friends or even colleagues who are relying on EWCS to provide the food bank program just so they can eat.

As a result, the shelves are starting to show empty spaces and EWCS needs help from the community to help fill its food bank shelves once again.

Items that are in the biggest need include instant pasta, rice, tomato soup, hearty soups and stews, Kraft Dinner, hot and cold cereals, men’s and ladies’ deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, toilet paper, baked beans, salmon, school snacks (fruit cups, granola bars, etc.), canned fruits and vegetables (peas, green beans, carrots) and coffee or tea.
