Groups receive $3,250 each from golf tourney

MINTO – Four local groups received $3,250 each from the proceeds of the 2023 Minto Mayor’s Golf Tournament.

At the Oct. 3 town council meeting, the Harriston Skating Club, Grey Wellington Theatre Guild, Palmerston 150th Anniversary Committee and Teviotdale History Group were presented with the funds from the Aug. 10 tournament, held at Pike Lake Golf Centre.

“The groups chosen to benefit in 2023 provide a wide range of services to our community, including planning events to bring current and past residents together, teaching youth sports, supporting the arts and celebrating the history of Teviotdale,” said Minto deputy clerk and coordinator of human resources and legislative services Quinn Foerter, a member of the tournament organizing committee.

The Harriston Skating Club is a non-profit organization that aims to provide opportunities for fun, fitness and achievement for skaters of all ages across Minto. The club will be using the funds from the golf tournament to purchase additional equipment for the Canskate program and upgrade older equipment and supplies. The remainder will be used to keep costs affordable for local youth.

The Grey-Wellington Theatre Guild is a non-profit organization that will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024. The guild will be putting the funds toward purchase of rights, scripts, musical score and production materials as it stages the musical Anne of Green Gables in the fall of its anniversary season.

The Teviotdale History Group will be using the funds to place an outdoor historical display highlighting six historic locations in the hamlet. The display will include Miller’s Corners, Teviotdale Truck Stop, SS #13 Minto school, Club 23 dance hall, Teviotdale Speedway and Teviotdale Community Centre.

The Palmerston Homecoming Committee will be using the funds from the golf tournament to book venues and entertainment for the 150th homecoming event that will be occurring in August 2025.

Mayor Dave Turton acknowledged the work of town staff members in organizing the tournament.

“It was very seamless. It’s always very seamless and it’s well put together,” said Turton.

“Every year we have worthwhile opportunity to give money away to different groups … and we want to thank you for being a part of it,” Turton said to representatives of the recipient groups.

Over its 13-year history, the tournament has raised nearly $140,000 for 46 local organizations.
