GRCA rounding up heritage bridges in area

The Grand River Conservation Authority is looking to record a bit more of the heritage of its watershed.

Puslinch councillors recently reviewed correspondence from the GRCA’s chief administrative officer Joe Farwell that noted the Grand, Speed, Eramosa, Nith and Conestogo Rivers were declared Canadian Heritage Rivers in 1994.

The GRCA spearheaded that designation on behalf of its member municipalities.

Farwell  said the Heritage River inventory was created prior to the designation to demonstrate why the Grand River and its major tributaries warranted national recognition.

“Historic bridges are one of the key features supporting the Canadian Heritage River Designation and the GRCA has the opportunity to update that list.”

He said groups working with the GRCA were recently successful in securing funding to  undertake a comprehensive inventory of heritage bridges in the watershed. Work started earlier this year and is set to be complete in 2013.

Municipalities in the watershed were contacted to assist the Heritage Resources Centre with information about the bridge structures in their municipalities.
