GBHS releases historical video project

GUELPH – The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) announced the release of its historical video project, Change Starts Now: Our Stories. Our History. Our Heritage.

“There is an absence and erasure of Black history in Guelph, Wellington County and in Canada in general,” GBHS officials stated in a March 22 press release.

“The GBHS is doing our part to change this narrative and create resources for our community.”

The #ChangeStartsNow Historical Video Project is a series of five video shorts highlighting stories, struggles and triumphs of Black community members from the 1800’s and 1900’s.

“These videos will amplify their voices and root our experience and heritage within our shared understanding of local history,” officials say.

Videos will feature:

– Anna Maria Weems;

– Bud Fowler;

– Melissa Smith Hesson;

– Henry Dangerfield Lawson; and

– Mr. and Mrs. John Little.

The first video about Anna Maria Weems can be viewed on the GBHS YouTube channel.

The GBHS thanks Musagetes, Guelph Community Foundation and Hello Adventure Animation for supporting the project.
