Garden Festival was well attended despite some sketchy weather

The Harriston and District Horticultural Society’s June meeting was held in the auditorium.

President Diane Ireland-Kelly opened the meeting. Despite the inclement weather, the garden festival was well attended, after being relocated to the pavilion.

Jim Mabee of Tillsonburg spoke about the growing of roses. He said they should be planted early in the spring and watered well. When planting, one should dig the hole deeper than the plant, to loosen the soil, adding some super phosphorus or bone meal, but do not fertilize the first year. In the local climate it is suggested to plant deep enough that the crown is below the earth level because of our cold temperatures.

Dorelene Anderson had the most points in the design classes of the mini flower show. There was a good showing in the specimens classes also.

Anyone interested in going to the garden tour of the Ireland farm at Teeswater on July 9 should contact Diane at 519-338-3576.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments and social time followed.
