Free tree planting information sessions March 5 and 7

Growing and maintaining a beautiful mature forest has environmental, health and financial benefits for landowners, according to foresters at Credit Valley Conservation (CVC).

Landowners can learn about CVC’s tree planting and forest management services at two upcoming free information sessions.

Those interested are asked to drop by CVC Forestry Services’ new office at 15526 Heart Lake Rd., Caledon any time between 7 and 9pm on March 5 or March 7.

“Many landowners interested in planting trees might not know where to start,” said Mike Puddister, director of restoration and stewardship for  the CVC.

“This is an opportunity to get in-depth, one-on-one advice from our forestry department to help plan your next tree planting project,” he added.

Participants will learn how easy and inexpensive it is to plant a forest.

Landowners who work with CVC typically pay as little as $150 to plant their own forest using CVC’s Tree Seedling Program, one of three planting programs available.

Property owners with existing hardwood and evergreen woodlots will learn about forest management challenges and best practices.

Review best options

CVC foresters will meet with residents and review aerial photos of their property to discuss the best tree planting and forest management options for the site.

They will address tree planting and forest management questions and explain all subsidies, options and programs available, such as the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program.

Benefits of planting trees are numerous. Trees increase wildlife habitat and preserve the local environment by protecting sensitive features such as streams and wetlands.

They produce shade in the summer and reduce home energy costs. As trees grow they store carbon, reduce greenhouse gases and help mitigate climate change.
