Food security program FEWD faces $60,000 annual budget shortfall

GUELPH – Local community food security program Food Equity With Dignity (FEWD) is reporting a $60,000 budget shortfall for 2025.

FEWD reclaims raw foods that would otherwise end up in the landfill and turns them into dignified, equitable, and nourishing free meals for those in need across the city.

In 2024, officials say demand for the program increased by 15% per cent with 25,000 meals created and delivered to multiple locations across the city.

That number is only expected to increase in 2025 as people struggle with the continued increases in food prices at grocery stores.

FEWD also cooks food for multiple organizations in Guelph, providing food to organizations including Sanguen, Your Downtown Guelph Friends, Food Uniting Neighbours, and Stepping Stone.

“FEWD has become a critical piece of the food security puzzle in Guelph,” officials state.

Under the leadership of award winning chef Yasi Zorlutuna, FEWD is looking for businesses and individuals to help with donations, fundraising and sponsorship, officials say.

Thanks to grassroots fundraising efforts, and funders like the Oak Tree Project, FEWD will be able to sustain itself into March, but needs an additional $60,000 to make it through to the end of the year.

“In this critical time of need in our city we are hoping our community will step up and ensure this incredibly important program can continue getting healthy, delicious food into the hands of those who need it most,” said Zorlutuna.
