FERGUS SCOTTISH FESTIVAL: Wallace play gets open rehearsal Aug. 7, 8

An open rehearsal of Forged In Fire will be held at Melville United Church here on Aug. 7 and 8, from 1 to 2:30pm.

The play is set on May 6, 1307 at Loudon Hill, Ayrshire, Scotland and it is a dark night of the soul for Robert Bruce. Though King in name, he has suffered several losses and is on the verge of lasting defeat.

High in the lonely King’s seat,  Bruce puzzles on how to unite the fractious clans in Scotland’s defense when he is visited by Tamas of Ercildoune, who recounts for him the tragic true tale of William Wallace.

Forged In Fire is a play with music and song traditional and original, woven together to tell the story of the life of Wallace.

The content is drawn from existing historical records and literature which focus on Scotland’s Wars of Independence against the expansion of England under Edward I.

Along with Celtic folklore (including the influence of the Saints of Scotland), the play weaves the times, mixed with Aeolian pipes and drums, to give the audience a sense of medieval Scotland.

Wallace’s story celebrates the sacrifice of a people.

The book is by Rob McKinnon; music by Billy Farley.  The play is eveloped with the Pat the Dog Playwright Centre, and is a Needfire Production.

Everyone is welcome for the open rehearsal of the play-in-process as it readies for its world premiere next summer.  A question and answer session with the actors and authors will follow each performance.

The event is partnered with the Fergus Scottish Festival.

Donations can be made at the door, and refreshments will be available.
