Familiar faces running in Wellington-Halton Hills

People attending federal all candidates meetings in the Wellington-Halton Hills riding can be forgiven if they feel a strong sense of deja vu.

In fact, so can four of the five current candidates contesting the riding.

Incumbent Michael Chong, who lives south of Fergus, is again running for the Conservatives.

Liberal Barry Peters, who lives in the Rockwood area, is the only newcomer to the federal riding race this year. In the last election Bruce Bowser ran for the Liberals.

But all the other candidates to date are familiar.

Noel Duignan said in an interview on Tuesday he expects he will be carrying the NDP colours once again. He lived in Fergus during the last election, but has since moved to Georgetown. He said he expected the party’s nomination meeting to be set sometime later this week and he planned to contest it.

Brent Bouteiller will again be representing the Green Party. He has run federally and provincially several times for the party. He lives south of Fergus. And Jeffrey Streutker, of Georgetown, will again carry the banner of the Christian Heritage Party.

The election, to be held on May 2, was called on March 26 after the governing Conservatives lost a confidence motion on March 25.

No other parties had registered to field a candidate by press deadline.

The Wellington Federation of Agriculture is hosting an all candidates meeting at Aboyne Hall, at Wellington Place between Fergus and Elora, on April 20 to discuss agriculture issues in Wellington County. The meeting starts at 8pm.
