Faith Lutheran church goes green

It seems one problem actually was a blessing in disguise.

Nov. 16 marked the dedication of Faith Lutheran’s new solar panels.

A leaking roof in the spring of 2013 paved the way for the environmentally friendly project as a local church began to harness the power of the sun.

When drips started in the fellowship hall it became apparent that replacing the roof on the 20-year-old building was imminent.

Congregation members brainstormed ways to fundraise the extra money required for reshingling but went further and felt that this was the ideal time to go green with solar panels.

Spurred on by Bruce Bartleman, a former Edgewood camp director and retired pastor investigations were made.

“Producing carbon neutral solar power is a great way to be stewards of the earth, as Christians are called to be,” says Bartleman, who prodded the church council to look seriously at the project.

The church roof provided a large square foot area and excellent southern exposure to maximize catching the sun’s rays.

“Too bad the southern exposure is in the back yard and the rest of the community can’t see our project,” noted council chairperson Ingrid Kebbel-Beer.

Several companies were contacted and the ground work was laid. Property committee members, Harry Brandt. Don Kilimnik and Garry Willfang met many times with Paid for Power company representatives and Centre Wellington Hydro  to gain approvals for the project.

Installation began in May and the sun’s rays began producing power in June.

“We waited until the fall to dedicate the panels, as we had numerous other events scheduled, related Rev. Elina Salonen, the congregation’s pastor. “We want everyone to celebrate this initiative and for the whole community to know that we take environmental stewardship seriously.”

The solar panels also generate a monthly income which helps with expenses around the church.

Faith Lutheran Church is a forward-looking community of Christ’s followers who welcome all to worship and serve.
