In the mid-1800s the settlers in Eramosa Township eagerly anticipated the end of their isolation, with the pending arrival of a new railroad connecting Toronto and Guelph.
Parishioners in the thriving village of Everton were shocked when the train was routed to Rockwood instead.
However, the settlers still built the stone church as a tribute to God, who they believed had brought them through their early trials. The church is still viewed today by some as a significant reminder of the skills of Ontario’s early builders.
This month the present congregation is inviting Guelph-Eramosa residents and former friends to join in the celebration of the 150th birthday of this grand old building.
There will be two services at the church to celebrate the anniversary: on Oct. 22 at 6:30pm and on Oct. 23 at 10:30am.
It will be a time for reminiscing and also enjoying a happy reunion with old friends and neighbours. Former pastors and members have been invited to come as well. And of course, there will be plenty of music and country food.
