Erin home severely damaged by nighttime fire

Cause of fire not deemed suspicious, remains under investigation

ERIN – Volunteer firefighters from stations 10 and 50 in Erin and Hillsburgh responded to a structure fire in Erin on the night of July 25.

Everyone safely evacuated the Ninth Line single-storey home before 35 firefighters arrived after 10:11pm on Tuesday.

The fire is believed to have started in a shed attached to the home, according to fire chief Jim Sawkins.

“The shed was fully involved and had spread to the eaves and had accessed the roof,” the chief stated.

The shed fire was brought under control and firefighters entered the house to extinguish fire in the home’s attic and adjoining bedrooms.

Sawkins said the fire was under control at 10:48pm and put out shortly after 1am.

A truck and crew members remained on scene until Enbridge Gas arrived to shut down a leaking gas line on the house.

According to Sawkins, the house was severely damaged by the fire, and the shed is a “total write-off.”

Though the cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation, the chief hasn’t deemed it suspicious.
