Elora skatepark expected to become a reality by summer 2019

ELORA – It’s been a long and winding road, but the Elora skatepark may be a reality by August.

On Dec. 17, Centre Wellington councillors accepted the bid for design and construction of the skatepark from New Line Skateparks Inc. at a maximum total of $362,000, exclusive of HST.

Managing director of corporate services Dan Wilson said the Elora Community Centre Skateboard Area was an approved project in the 2018 capital budget.

In addition to township funds, donations were collected from the community by the Centre Wellington Skatepark Association for use in this project, Wilson said.

In June council also approved the allocation of $203,296 from MacDonald Trust Funds for the design and construction of the skatepark, as requested by the Skatepark Association.

That gave the project a combined budget of $430,000.

The project is to proceed in 2019, with the township responsible for procuring and managing the skatepark design and construction.

The Skatepark Association and the community will be encouraged to attend a public open house and meetings and to provide online feedback on the design of the skatepark.

A report to council stated “New Line is one of Canada’s most experienced municipal skatepark design-build teams with over 270 recognized projects across Canada, the United States and Europe over the last 17 years.”

Local parks designed and built by the company include Rockmosa Skatepark and Three Musketears Skatepark  in Acton.

The report states a location at the Elora community centre is not yet finalized.

Wilson said the project is within budget allocations, including ancillary costs over and above the proposal.
