Drayton advances to league finals

DRAYTON 6 BETHEL 1

Drayton entered this game leading the best-of-three A Division semi-finals 1-0 and wasted no time jumping into two-goal lead by the middle of the first period. Pat Landman scored the first goal, followed by Eric Deckers a minute later. The goals were assisted by Jason Mohle and Mark Timmerman.

Bethel worked hard to stay in the game but Drayton added a third goal at the end of the second period. Mark Timmerman and Herman Mulder teed up Scott Nieuwland at the point. Nieuwland blasted a slap shot to send the puck to the back of the net.

However Bethel refused to give up. Brandon Shoemaker scored late in the second period to keep the game close. Assisted by Sam Altwegg and Tim Bauman.

The celebration was short lived. Pat Landman stormed back for Drayton and scored two more goals in the final minutes to complete his hat trick, assisted by Scott Nieuwland and Robyn Curry.

Drayton did not let up in the third, and added one more goal before the period ended. Herman Mulder scored the goal, assisted by Eric Deckers and Cam Mohle.

With the win Drayton swept the semi-final series and advances to the A Division Finals.

FLORADALE 5 COMMUNITY 2

Floradale entered the game trailing Community 1-0 in the best-of-three semi finals. Knowing it needed a win, Floradale scored the opening goal early in the first. Corey Wideman worked the puck to Dan Martin who snapped it past the goaltender to get things started. That proved to be the only goal in the period.

Floradale added another goal midway through the second period. Dan Martin once again played the role of the finisher with a goal off the set up passes by Ryan Martin and Josh Brohman.

Community came back to score a goal early in the third. Joe Clemmer snapped the puck past the netminder to keep his team within a goal, assisted by Gerald Martin and Tanner Hackbart.

Community kept the pressure going and was rewarded with the tying goal. Cal Martin sent the puck to the back of the net, assisted by Hackbart and Clemmer.

Both teams skated hard for the next goal. It was Floradale that took back the lead. Josh Brohman grabbed the puck at the blue line and blasted a slap shot into the net.

Floradale added an insurance goal a minute later with a shot by Brandon Martin, assisted by Mike Martin and Javon Martin.

Community pulled its goaltender in the final minute for the extra skater. However it was Dan and Mike Martin who gained control of the puck to give Javon Martin a shot into the empty net for the final goal.

The win by Floradale tied the best-of-three semi-finals 1-1.

MISSIONARY 3 LISTOWEL 2

Missionary wasted no time in trying to wrap up its semi-final series. Leading the best-of-three B Division series 1-0, they scored the opening goal early in the first.

Rich Colwill started the Missionary scoring with an unassisted goal.

However, Listowel played hard to stay alive and kept the Missionary scoring quiet until the third period when Matt Burnett lit up the score board, assisted by Dylan Bults and Rich Colwill.

With Listowel’s hopes deflated, Matt Freund added another Missionary goal to strengthen the lead, assisted by Nathan Rhame.

Listowel still managed to rebound and came back for a goal midway through the third. Travis Kuepfer scored the Listowel goal, assisted by Kyle Streicher and Mark Hockley.

Listowel refused to give up and stormed the Missionary net to gain a goal late in the third. Max Brubacher finished the play with the goal, assisted by Mike Gingrich and Lowell Weber.

Although Listowel played hard, its season ended as Missionary held on for the win and advance onto the B Division finals.
