Donation facilitates acquisition of rail-style benches for museum

PALMERSTON – The Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum recently received a monetary donation from the late Dr. Ronald Horning, a former resident of Palmerston and successful Chicago veterinarian, to honour his cousin, Susan Welsh of Palmerston.

“The donation enabled two beautiful railway-type benches to be created and donated in Susan’s name,” museum officials state.

Attending a Sept. 1 gathering at the museum, on behalf of the Horning family from Chicago, were Horning’s wife of 53 years, Karen and his two children, Jennifer and Scott.

Horning was born in Palmerston and graduated from Palmerston High School.  He then attended Ontario Veterinary Collage, graduating in 1955.

Later he moved to Chicago and founded the Near North Veterinary Hospital, which he headed for 50 years.

Because several of his relatives were railway workers, Horning kept in touch with many residents of Palmerston and was a fan of the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum.
