Dirksen suggests investigation of creating local United Way

Deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen thinks council here should take a look into forming a United Way for the town.

But the majority of the conversation for council was: Is the proposal a motion, or a notice of motion.

She said a notice will give council two weeks to think about it, and by then, she would have more information to provide.

“We’re on notice,” Mayor David Anderson said.

Councillor Wayne Martin said for clarification, the item on the agenda includes motions and notices of motion.

Anderson said motions can be presented if there is agreement by council to bring something forward immediately.

Clerk Marsha Paley said perhaps a policy is needed regarding both items.

Paley said her experience is notices of motion generally come forward with background information already attached, allowing a proper motion to be drafted.

“But I need to talk to council as to what has been done in the past,” she said.

Martin said there have been motions and notices of motion dealt with. Part of the issue was  the emergency of a situation.

Anderson said generally a notice of motion did not need to be seconded. It would be handed over to the clerk and by the next council meeting the background would be available for discussion.

He added, as Martin had indicated, that when a notice is presented and there is agreement by council, it could be dealt with at that time “if it’s important and has to be dealt with.”

Dirksen said there is no urgency.

“And I will have more information by the next council meeting, when it is discussed.”
