Damascus WI recently treated to high tea

On March 11, twelve members of the Damascus WI met at the home of Wayne and Dianne Orr.

President Miriam Green opened the meeting with a reading Hungry Boys Get Skunked. The secretary’s minutes, treasurer’s report and the standing committee reports were heard.

District director Pat Benham reported that the Wellington North District Women’s Institute annual meeting is May 20 at 3pm in the Moorefield community centre with a catered meal at a cost of $15.  The theme is Go Green.

In correspondence, a letter from Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario was read asking all members to write a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty regarding the Positron Emission Tomography scan. Ontario is the only province that does not have that scanner. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans are read alongside CT and MRI giving what the structure is and the functional process in the body. Such scans can give an early diagnosis to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, epilepsy, heart disease and cancer (breast, lung, esophageal).

At noon, hostess Dianne Orr assisted by Pat Benham and Shirley Langdon served an old fashioned Victorian High Tea. To complement the meal a cold blueberry soup was served followed with various sandwiches, crusts removed, salmon, egg salad and the traditional cucumber, buttermilk tea biscuits, jam and marmalade with a cup of English tea served in a real china cup and saucer. To complete the meal lemon chiffon cake and white and dark chocolate dipped cream puffs were served.

Roll call was, "What is your most treasured memory that you will pass on to future generations?" Stories of the good old days spending time with family, grand parents, collectibles, acquired antiques, photos fully documented (when, where, who and event) were among the most treasured memories to pass on.

Orr, curator of the Tweedsmuir history books who has done an excellent job in putting together and documenting meetings and the institute’s involvement in community events, had the books available and we spent some time perusing and reminiscing.

The Damascus Women’s Institute’s next meeting is April 8 at 10am at the Damascus community hall. It is the annual meeting and pot luck lunch.
