Council approves additional street lighting in Rockwood

BRUCEDALE – Rockwood is about to get a little brighter, after the approval of six new streetlights along Main Street North between Gzowski Street and Edgar Bonner Avenue.

Guelph/Eramosa council approved the new streetlights in a unanimous vote at its regular meeting on March 3.

The decision follows resident concerns regarding the visibility of the Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School’s entrance inside the Bonarrow Subdivision.

Councillor Corey Woods raised concerns about the project cost and inquired why the Bonarrow subdivision developers did not extend the streetlights.

“When they put in the Bonarrow subdivision, should the developer not have paid for the extending of the streetlights, is that something that was missed in the subdivision agreement?” asked Woods.

“Because normally, the taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for this; it should be the developer.”

Public works director Harry Niemi told council the issue was “likely an oversight” and stated the project’s funding will come from the streetlight reserve and the Rockwood hydro fund equally.

An exact timeframe for the installation of the lights is unclear, as Niemi told council it will depend on material availability, tariff discussions and Hydro One approval.

However, the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
