Council: Addresses must be posted on all buildings

Guelph-Eramosa residents and businesses without an address posted on the front of their homes or buildings are now in contravention of township rules.

Last week council passed a civic addressing bylaw requiring addresses be posted on the front of buildings.

Clerk Meaghen Reid explained in a report, “The general intent of a civic addressing bylaw is to establish a simple system of identifying properties that will ensure the accurate and efficient routing of emergency vehicles and other services, while also accommodating growth.”

Reid explained the biggest concern is in urban areas, particularly Rockwood, that have several houses without identification numbers.

Mayor Chris White said the new bylaw will require those owners to identify their address.

According to the bylaw, the owners of all residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, religious and educational buildings in the township must post their civic address on the front of the building.

All numbers must be at least 10cm in height, read horizontally and be displayed in numeral form (not written).

A separate post and number plate – to be obtained from the township – are required for buildings that are 9 metres or more away from the road.

Council unanimously approved the new bylaw. Councillor John Scott was absent.
