Car of the future to visit Guelph on May 25

Ecocar is a three-year collegiate competition running from 2008-11, involving 17 university student teams from schools across North America.

One of those teams will be visiting here on May 25 to show the public some of the possibilities in future travel.

The student teams compete to transform a donated stock vehicle into an alternatively fueled, eco-friendly car while maintaining consumer acceptability, safety, and performance.

The University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT, at www.uwaft.com) is one of only two teams implementing the 100% emissions-free, fuel cell hybrid design for the competition.

The team, for the second consecutive challenge, has elected to implement a hydrogen fuel cell design in the form of a fuel cell/plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (FC-PHEV).  It is one of few in the world.

The team is fast approaching its final competition, where only one of 16 other teams has chosen to attempt fuel cell integration. Spreedpro Imaging TGT has donated time and materials to do that.

On May 25 from 2 to 5pm, the team will hold a barbecue at Speedpro at 650 Woodlawn Road West, where people can come and see the vehicle, ask questions of the team, and generally promote green technology.
