Be aware of tattoo, piercing risks

Local public health officials are advising people to be aware of the risks when getting a piercing or tattoo.

Recently, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) inspectors received several reports of tattoos being done at unlicensed and non-inspected locations, including private homes.

Anyone who has received a tattoo or piercing at such an establishment is asked to contact WDGPH at 1-800-265-7293 extension 4752 for follow-up and advice.

“If someone is considering a tattoo or piercing, we recommend they use a professional studio that is properly equipped,” said Janice Walters, program manager for the Control of Infectious Diseases.

“It’s very important for all instruments that contact blood or body fluids to be properly sterilized in a regularly tested autoclave. Although there is a low risk of infection, complications can range from minor skin irritations to serious blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis B, and C, as well as HIV.

“We inspect licensed establishments to ensure they meet the standards set by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care.” When getting a tattoo or piercing, make sure the operator follows these safety procedures:

– washes their hands before and after the procedure;

– wears single-use gloves for each client;

– opens a new package of sterile needles in front of you  for each tattoo or piercing;

– uses approved skin antiseptic to disinfect the skin before tattooing or piercing;

– when tattooing, does not re-dip the utensils into ink that is used on others;
