Barron confirmed as Liberal candidate

ACTON – Over 100 local Liberal Party members turned out here on March 31 to confirm their Wellington-Halton Hills candidate for the upcoming federal election.

Dr. Lesley Barron, a surgeon at the Georgetown Hospital, was acclaimed to carry the party message and spoke about her commitment to universal health care, income inequality, science and fact-based decision making, gender equality and environmental protection.

“Even the strongest and healthiest amongst us will become unhealthy if we do not take care of our environment,” she said.

Dr. Don Trant commented, “Lesley was the first female general surgeon to join our Georgetown hospital and her skills are among the best.

“She is a caring and insightful leader who has boundless energy and commitment to improving people’s health and welfare.”

On hand to support Dr. Barron’s campaign launch was Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett who said. “One of the ways we judge the health of our democracy is by the quality of the candidates who choose to run for office.”

Bennett suggested that during the upcoming election Liberals will address a wide range of issues.

“We are always listening and learning what is important to people,” said Bennett.

“We know that some are worrying about the end of the month, while others are worrying about the end of their universe,” she added in reference to the possible impacts of climate change.

Bennett encouraged the audience to engage voters with positive messages.

The Wellington-Halton Hills riding includes Georgetown, Acton, Erin, Fergus, Elora, Rockwood, Puslinch and surrounding rural areas.
