Arthur Mites get silver medal

The Arthur Mites take second place in the Select baseball tournament in Oshawa on June 20.

The team made of 8- to 10-year-old girls had never played together before and did not know what to expect.

The first game the girls played was against the host, Oshawa. With solid bats, good pitching and decent defense the girls prevailed 15-10.

In the second game, the team was up against a strong Barrie pitcher. Barrie defeated the girls 10-5.

The third game was played against Whitby. They had a great pitcher who held the girls to one run over four innings.

Going into the 5th the girls were down 8-1 and the time limit starting to run out. The girls never gave up and pushed 11 runs across the plate, where Arthur player Elsie Post came in the bottom of the inning to pitch and shut Whitby down to secure the win.

The team never gave up and tried hard right until the end.

This placed the girls in the final against Barrie who are the defending Select Champions from last year.

The first two innings were close as the score was 3-2 for Barrie. Barrie started their ace and the team battled her for her three innings leaving with the score trailing at 4-2. Barrie pulled their ace and Arthur immediately tied it at 4-4 going into the 5th inning. As soon as they tied it Barrie put their ace back in. In the 5th Barrie scored 5 to win 9-5 giving the girls a silver in their very first tournament played.

They will be playing an exhibition game versus Guelph in August and play in the Select Championships August 22 to 23 in Brantford.

The team is coached by Peter Post, Kevin Bultena and Jason Neil.

The coaches are hoping that the team will play Select ball for one more year before turning into a rep team in 2017. If you are interested in trying out next year as a 2004-2005 birth date please contact Peter at 647-823-5783.
