Wellington North council has approved a $5,000 loan to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for its efforts to bring refugees to Mount Forest.

Tom Sullivan, a member of the church, asked council on Jan. 25 to support the group with a loan.

The group, working through Mennonite Central Committee as a sponsor, needs to raise 75 per cent of the total $28,000 to support a refugee family.

Sullivan explained they are $5,000 short in their fundraising activities so far.

“Our intent is only to provide us that injection of funds to get us started so that we deal with the Mennonite Central Committee, that we’ve met our 75 per cent and start the process going,” he said.

Temporary support

“Our responsibility is to bring this family into town and we need to support them in conjunction with the federal government for a year. And the intent is within that year we will see them become full and substantive citizens of our community.”

Council agreed, granting the $5,000 loan.
