WEB ONLY: Generator failure cause of recent boil water advisory

Mapleton officials want to assure residents a recent boil water advisory was related to a generator failure and not the result of a specific health issue.

“There are no health concerns at all,” said clerk and Chief Administrative Officer Patty Sinnamon. “Staff was on site and dealt with it immediately.”

High winds on Saturday afternoon knocked down trees, blew off parts of at least one barn roof and downed power lines throughout the township. Drayton was without power from about 4pm on Saturday until 5:30pm the following day.

Following the power outage, the township’s backup generator did not come on immediately as it is supposed to, Sinnamon said, which created a “low pressure situation” for the Drayton water system.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, she noted, the township must issue a boil water advisory when such a situation arises.

She added the local fire department went door to door in Drayton to deliver the message and left notices with businesses that were closed at the time. On Monday morning, the township notified local schools of the advisory by phone.

According to the ministry, before the advisory can be lifted, the township must have two consecutive successful flow tests – one was completed on Monday and the other was scheduled for Tuesday (the results of which were not known by press time).

Sinnamon said on Monday she expected the advisory to last until at least Tuesday evening. She also noted the generator was immediately sent out for repairs.
