Township okays $123,000 in sidewalk, curb improvements

Local sidewalks will soon be getting much needed improvements.

On May 12 council approved $123,580 for the construction and repair of local sidewalks and curbs, particularly in Moorefield and Alma.

The lowest tender for the work came from GJR Construction Ltd., of Kitchener, at $154,476. The other was submitted by City Cement Construction, of Moorefield, for $196,980.

Council had approved a total budget of $130,000 for the work, including $5,000 for the Maryborough Terrace through the Maryborough Township Housing Corporation, and $25,000 from the Drayton downtown revitalization project.

Public works director Larry Lynch said he has reduced the quantity in the tender by 20%, in cooperation with the low bidder, to lower the overall tender amount to $123,580 to meet the budget.

“Since this is a service tender, we will carry out repairs and construction until the budget funding is depleted,” Lynch said in his report to council.

Priorities for sidewalk and curb work were listed by Lynch as follows:

– McGivern Street in Moorefield, from Booth Street to Maryborough Public School;

– a new sidewalk on Simpson Street in Alma, from Wellington Road 7 to Alma Public School;

– a new sidewalk on Elora Street in Alma, from the Optimist Hall to Simpson Street;

– repairs on both side of Elora Street, from Peel Street to Simpson Street; and

– street scape enhancements in conjunction with work to improve access to the Drayton Festival Theatre.

Lynch said on May 12 the work would have started already if not for rainy weather, which delayed other GJR projects. But he noted the tender includes a deadline of July 3.

Council unanimously approved the bid of GJR Construction for $123,580.
