Roundabout construction starting at crash-prone Highway 6 intersection
Wellington Road 22, 8th Line access to be completely closed
WELLINGTON COUNTY – Pylons are out, signs installed and construction on Highway 6 at Wellington Road 22 and 8th Line for a new roundabout is set to begin July 13.
There will be no access from Wellington Road 22 or 8th Line onto Highway 6 in either direction for about a year.
There will also be lane closures on Highway 6 as work progresses, but the highway is expected to remain open.
During the construction, local traffic east of Highway 6 will be detoured via Wellington Road 22, Jones Baseline, and Guelph-Nichol Townline, while traffic west of Highway 6 will be detoured via 8th Line, Wellington Road 7, and Wellington Road 51.

The province is moving forward with plans to turn the crash-prone Highway 6 intersection into a roundabout later this year to improve safety.
Over the past decade, there have been 84 collisions at the intersection. Though there have been fatalities in the past, provincial data shows there have been no lives lost in crashes at the intersection since at least 2016.
The Ministry of Transportation ignored several requests from the Advertiser for the number of collisions at the intersection so far this year.

The project includes installation of a new multi-lane roundabout, road improvements on Highway 6 and Wellington Road 22/8th Line, and replacement of the Cox Creek culvert on Highway 6, north of the intersection.
Additional work includes new lighting, drainage upgrades, roadside safety enhancements, signage improvements and pavement rehabilitation.
The province has hired Guelph-based Capital Paving for the job.
Egis Group completed design work and an environmental assessment related to the intersection, as well as at Second Line in Centre Wellington, where another roundabout is planned. There is no word yet on when that work will begin.
