Pumpkin patch profits purchase stuffies for hospitalized children

MAPLETON – It all began with a penguin.

Last March, Rosslyn Campbell found herself in the emergency room with a severe allergic reaction.

“While waiting for the doctor to give us our next steps, a very kind nurse at the Palmerston and District Hospital came to our room with a stuffed penguin,” recalls her mother, Claire Ross-Campbell.

“Rosslyn, who was three at the time, snuggled that penguin and it made her feel so safe and special,” Claire added.

Last summer, Rosslyn, her grandfather Buck Ross and great uncle Pat Brewster planted a pumpkin patch. They ended up with so many pumpkins they decided to sell some to neighbours, friends and family.

Every day when Rosslyn got off the bus she ran to check on her pumpkin sales.

“When the season was over, she counted her hard earned money and made the admirable decision to buy stuffed animals for our local hospital,” Claire explained.

“Rosslyn says she wants kids to have a friend if they are hurt,” she added.
