Province raising speed limit on most highways
TORONTO – The Ontario government is raising the speed limit from 100 to 110km/h on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways, transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced on June 24.
The change builds on increases to sections of provincial highways between 2022 and 2024.
Currently, 873 kilometres of provincial highways are posted at 110km/h, according to a news release.
Once in effect, nearly 89 per cent of the province’s highway network will carry the higher limit, up from 43 per cent today.
The province says the limits will be in place by the end of September.
The province has started raising the limit on sections of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario, to be followed by sections on other routes, including the Queen Elizabeth Way and Highways 400, 402, 403 and 417.
The province claims the raised limits will shave off driving time, but doesn’t account for traffic volumes.
