Proposed GTA planning will affect how local roads are dealt with in Erin

There’s no getting away from the GTA’s impact on local roads.

Recent transportation studies for the Halton and Peel Regions may have a major impact here as well.

That opinion from Erin town planner Sally Stull comes from recent reviews of the documents that deal with roads within the regions and to some extent the boundary regions of neighbours.

Early in the council meeting on another issue, Mayor Lou Maieron noted he had asked at a previous meeting if there were any statistical data to indicate certain areas are accident prone intersections.

He said in 2000, Halton evaluated its troublesome intersections along the Erin boundary, providing actual numbers in terms of accidents and a comparison of averages.

“That’s what I’d like to see come back from the OPP, so we can see if an intersection is having above or below average numbers of accidents.”

Maieron said in Halton it meant the additional clearing of sight lines.

Stull told council of Peel Region’s future road widths. They will need a second road or they will need to incorporate collector roads to the 401. The west corridor connection to Highways 400 and 401 has not been determined.

Stull also presented councillors with information on the Halton Master Transportation Plan.

Her talk included the proposed road jurisdiction and classification changes, the Halton transportation improvements, system congestion, the “do nothing” scenario and the ultimate road network work needed to meet 2031 demands.

Resolutions from council directed staff to request a meeting with Hatch Mott MacDonald Consulting Engineers to discuss the proposed recommendation to designate and build an arterial road for a truck route prior to 2031 along the Halton Erin Town  Line and Winston Churchill Boulevard to deal with the forecast traffic demand and background data.

Further, council asked that such a meeting be held in conjunction with the Wellington County director of planning and development, the county engineer, the town planner and Erin’s road superintendent.
