Palmerston students shine at drama festival
PALMERSTON – Students from Norwell District Secondary School recently represented their community at the National Theatre School (NTS) Western Regional Drama Festival, held April 14 to 18 at the Opera House in Gravenhurst, after advancing from the district competition in March.
In just their second year attending the festival, Theatre Norwell students continue to establish themselves within a highly competitive field of schools, officials say.
At regionals, their production of Darklight earned two significant recognitions: Distinctive Merit for Innovative Choreography and Movement and an Award of Excellence in Sound Design.
“These honours reflect the students’ commitment to creating sophisticated, layered theatrical work – particularly in areas that demand both technical precision and creative risk-taking,” stated Norwell teacher advisor Dillon Bernier in a press release.
“For a northern, rural school where access to extensive arts programming and resources can be limited, these achievements carry added significance,” Bernier added.
“The ability of Norwell students to compete at this level – and to be recognized for the depth of their work and the intentional choices behind it – speaks to both their talent and their determination to push beyond those limitations.”
The play explores themes of anxiety, depression and resilience through ensemble storytelling, with choreography and sound design playing a central role in shaping the emotional landscape of the piece, officials say.
Bernier said “Recognition in these areas affirms the students’ ability to use theatre as a powerful and purposeful form of expression.”
He said the students “committed themselves fully to the creative process.
“To see their work recognized – particularly in choreography, movement and sound design – speaks to the level of thought, care and collaboration they brought to this production ... These students deserve to be acknowledged at the highest level.”
The NTS Drama Festival provides students with the opportunity to perform, receive professional adjudication and participate in workshops that further develop their theatrical skills.
Theatre Norwell extends its sincere thanks to the school community, families, and the Upper Grand District School Board for its continued support in making these opportunities possible.
Students now look ahead with excitement as they continue to grow and build on this experience in future festival participation, Bernier said.
