Ontario Regional Driving Championship to be hosted at Grand River Raceway

The 2016 Ontario Regional Driving Championship is scheduled for June 24 at Grand River Raceway in Elora.

The 2016 event will mark the second time that the Elora half-mile track has been the venue for the Ontario Regional.

“Grand River Raceway is really looking forward to hosting the Ontario Regional Driving Championship,” said Kelly Spencer, the track’s manager of marketing and communications.

“The breadth of driving talent in Ontario is comparable to the best-of-the-best in any jurisdiction the world-over,” said Spencer.

Invitations were extended to drivers based on several criteria including their 2015 win statistics on their circuit.

The participating drivers are: Alfie Carroll, Billy Davis Jr., Trevor Henry, Jody Jamieson, James MacDonald, Bob McClure, Doug McNair, Robert Shepherd and Nick Steward. Drivers will receive points based on their finishing position.

The top two drivers will join six other drivers at the 2016 National Driving Championship on Oct. 14 in London.

The winner of the NDC will represent Canada in harness racing’s 2017 World Driving Championship, hosted by Standardbred Canada in concert with the World Trotting Conference in August.

Cheerleaders wanted

Grand River Raceway wants help cheering on these drivers in their quest for an ORDC title.

Cheerleaders will wear the driving colours of their respective drivers and will act as a cheering and support section, engaging with fans and spectators during eight races of the competition.

All cheerleaders will receive a swag bag and a betting voucher and are invited to attend the post event reception.

The cheerleader of the winning driver will receive an additional $100 betting voucher.

Submit name, age, and why they should win via email to tmacdonnell@grandriverraceway.com. Submissions must be received by June 17. The successful applicants will be announced June 20.
