Legion Week history in Ontario

In 1953, a group of comrades from Legions in Kent and Blenheim discussed how to spread the word about the Legion across the province.

That same year, the first Legion Week was hosted by the Dresden Legion, with an open house, inviting the general public to learn more about the branch and what it does for the community.

In 1975, the whole District ‘A’ started a Legion Week.

In 1980, after debate and consideration, Ontario Command provincial executive committee unanimously decided Legion Week would be an annual event.

By convention statue, “Legion Week in Ontario” was declared to be held annually on the third week in the month of September.

“Legion Week” is a priority over any other Legion event during that period, unless that event can be utilized as part of the “Legion Week” program.

If a branch feels it cannot hold a week of activities, or at least an open house for one day, it should ensure that the community is aware of what the Legion has done, is doing and will do, as well as encourage membership for eligible candidates.
