Guelph Symphony Orchestra offers classics, festive music to start the season

Guelph Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas offering is a blend of classics and festive seasonal music and will be presented on Dec. 11 at 3pm at the River Run Centre.

Welcoming the Grand River Chorus and with international opera baritone James Westman, it will be an afternoon of music by Bach, Handel, Vaughan-Williams, and Tchaikovsky.  The audience will be invited to join in for an annual sing-along.

Artistic director and conductor Judith Yan hopes the concert will invite Guelph audiences into the Christmas spirit.

“Come be a part of the GSO holiday celebrations,’ Yan said. “Make GSO’s European Noël your first party of the season.”

The New Year Dreams of Vienna concert will follow on Jan. 1, at 3pm, at the River Run Centre. GSO’s annual Viennese-style musical extravaganza has become a Guelph tradition.

Featuring the return of tenor and raconteur Mark DuBois, together with soprano Corinne Lynch, and music paired with dancing, it is an event to welcome in the New Year.

The 2011-12 season also launches GSO’s new under-30 ticket series.

Anyone under the age of 30 can purchase a regularly priced ticket for $20 from 6pm Friday until the Sunday concert time of 3pm. Tickets can be purchased either online or in person for best available seats. Proof of age is required at time of collection.

Tickets for those performances are available at the River Run Centre box office (519-763-3000) or can be purchased online at riverrun.ca.
