GILES, Hazel Marjorie Ruth (nee Eveson)
With sad hearts we said “Goodbye” to Mom on April 19, 2026. Surrounded by love and visits with her family, Hazel passed away St. Joseph’s Palliative Care Centre in Guelph. Born in Toronto in 1929, Hazel was the elder daughter of Frank and Sarah Louise Eveson, and predeceased by her older brother Frederick and younger sister Mary Lou. She met George Giles in Etobicoke during her high school years, and they married in 1949. Just shy of 60 years of marriage, George suddenly passed away in 2008. Hazel leaves behind 3 children, Michael (Frances), Catherine (Doug LaPorte– deceased,) Anita (George Christou), and 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. It is impossible to list all of the activities Hazel was involved in through her life. She was active in sports and very competitive. She enjoyed tennis, badminton, bowling, curling, softball and golf in the Etobicoke clubs. Mom never did learn how to drive so she bicycled to and from games and tournaments, and her trophies are the highlights of her commitment to these sports. She volunteered 20 years with the Girl Guide. And she was well known in the local community during her 20 years of working at Centennial Park in various positions. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling across Canada, sailing in Georgian Bay and cottage life in Muskoka. Mom was a keen fisherwoman, and enjoyed seasonal berry picking - although she kept a keen eye out for local bears! She chose the cottages especially for the grandchildren and their activities through the years. She always has some creative project on the go – painting, woodworking, stained glass, knitting, crafting. When arthritic knees grew troublesome, she turned to euchre and bingo in nearby groups and 2 weeks before her passing she was playing shuffleboard. Recently, Mom moved to Guelph to be closer to family. She had hoped to live to be 100 – and on her 96th birthday she read a card and exclaimed ‘Surely I am 100 by now!” So, here’s to you, Mom. You surely made 100 with all you packed into your life. We would like to thank the staff at The Villages of Riverside Glen in Guelph, the staff in emergency and in-patient care at Guelph General Hospital, and the staff at St. Joseph’s Rehab and Palliative Care, Guelph. Mom’s visit with all of you was relatively short, but you all helped in so many ways. Visitations and Celebration of Life will take place on May 3, 2026 – 11:00am – 2:00pm with speeches at 12 noon, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 2723 Victoria St. North, Breslau, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be made on her memorial pages at www.MemoryFuneral.com
